The five students, all of whom are deeply involved with NIF data, diagnostics, and analyses, use the accelerator facility to test and develop their NIF diagnostics and platforms. They follow four earlier MIT PhD students—Dan Casey, Mike Rosenberg, Hans Rinderknecht, and Alex Zylstra—who were NIF’’s first PhD students (see “NIF-MIT Partnership Mints New PhDs”). After the meeting, Herrmann gave a talk at the MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center about the NIF program and frontier research activities.
