LLNL and NIF and Photon Science certified laser safety officer (CLSO) Jamie King has been named a fellow of the Laser Institute of America (LIA). The honor is the highest level of membership in the LIA, the international professional society for laser organizations, applications, and safety.

King and Eric Mottay, founder of Amplitude Laser Group of France, were recognized as fellows during award ceremonies in October at the annual meeting of the International Congress on Applications of Lasers & Electro-Optics (ICALEO) in Chicago.

“I feel quite honored to have received this award, being mentioned on the same list as Arthur Schawlow and Charles Townes,” King said. “Without the opportunity to come to LLNL 17 years ago, I may not have had the platform from which to be recognized.”

King, who joined the Lab’s National Ignition Facility as an LSO in 2006, is an acclaimed industry safety expert. He was also just reelected to the LIA’s board of trustees.

According to the LIA, the grade of fellow recognizes members who have “attained unusual professional distinction” in laser science, technology, applications, and/or laser safety, and who have provided “outstanding service to their field.”

To become eligible, candidates need to have at least 10 years of experience in laser science and engineering in the academic, medical, industrial, or government sectors.

King joins Ken Barat, who was NIF’s LSO from 2002 to 2006, on the list of LIA fellows. King previously received the LIA’s R. James Rockwell, Jr., Educational Achievement Award for outstanding contributions to laser safety education.

For the ICALEO closing plenary session, Félicie Albert, director of LLNL’s Jupiter Laser Facility, delivered a presentation on LLNL’s achievement of fusion ignition at NIF.
