Producing Fiber Optics
NIF & Photon Science researcher Reggie Drachenberg monitors glass source material feeding into the 2000° Centigrade furnace in the Bldg. 391 fiber optic production facility. Recent upgrades to the facility production tower include a set of three ovens for curing new polyimide-based high-temperature coatings and two banks of ultraviolet light-emitting diodes for curing conventional acrylate-based coatings rapidly and efficiently.
