NIF and Jupiter User Group Meeting 2013

About the NIF and Jupiter User Group Meeting

The 192-beam National Ignition Facility (NIF), the most energetic inertial confinement fusion (ICF) facility in the world, is now operational. The NIF laser's unprecedented power, precision, and reproducibility, coupled with over 50 available diagnostics and sophisticated target fabrication capability, enable a wide range of leading edge scientific experiments. Initial experiments in areas such as materials science, nucleosynthesis, and supernova hydrodynamics have been conducted.

The Jupiter Laser Facility at LLNL is an intermediate-scale facility that consists of several laser systems: two high-energy, long-pulse, ns-scale beams; a high-power, high-energy, ps-scale beam; a moderate-energy sub-100-fs, beam; and a flexible, moderate-rep-rate laser. Jupiter also has a low-energy preparation laser, a set-up and assembly laboratory, and target fabrication and metrology capabilities. Laser time at Jupiter is provided free-of-charge and apportioned through an open, competitive peer-review process. The diverse capabilities support different classes of experiments with the infrastructure to safely and simultaneously support multiple users with a range of experience levels. One-quarter of Jupiter's 445 users are students. Jupiter users come from 51 universities and 20 laboratories worldwide. Jupiter has small staff but is the 5th-highest-energy research laser in the US and is the only dedicated intermediate-scale laser user facility in the country.

To provide further information regarding scientific opportunities, a meeting of the NIF and Jupiter User Group will be held Sunday, February 10th, 2013, through Wednesday, February 13th, at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The meeting will describe NIF and JLF's capabilities to current and potential users and will include presentations regarding NIF and JLF experiments and related research at other facilities.
