Since Livermore’s historic fusion ignition achievement in 2022, scientists at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) have repeated the multi-megajoule feat several times, edging closer to the twin goals of understanding the physics of nuclear weapons and developing a fusion energy source.
HPC simulations have long contributed to these experiments, and El Capitan offers powerful new technology in the Laboratory’s quest to advance ICF applications.
