Igniter Awards Honor NIF&PS Culture Builders

By Thomas Lynch

The NIF&PS directorate is proud to honor the recipients of the 2025 Igniter Awards: Anne Provost, Arsenia Rendon, John Jett, and Raspberry Simpson. These four team members have shown outstanding commitment to building a positive, innovative work culture within NIF&PS.

“The Igniter Awards recognize, celebrate, and reward actions that ‘ignite’ a positive, supportive work culture,” said Principal Associate Director Vincent Tang. “This award honors NIF&PS team members who epitomize this culture, which drives world-class innovation and brings out the best in our workforce as we meet the challenges of our national security missions.”

Named in recognition of LLNL’s historic achievement of fusion ignition at NIF, the Igniter Award honors individuals who exemplify the Lab’s core values: Ideas, Impact, Integrity, Inclusiveness, and Zeal.

This year’s selection process drew from a pool of 29 nominees, with winners chosen by a committee commissioned by the NIF&PS leadership team.

Anne Provost: Building Connections and Culture

Colleagues praised administrator and business support specialist Anne Provost for her ability to bring people together and create a thriving team environment.

“Anne spends time and effort to bring team members together. She is always exploring new team-building activities, including BBQs, holiday parties, and office-warming activities,” one colleague noted.

When the team’s administrative assistant took a new position, Provost “seamlessly absorbed all responsibilities with no complaints or effort to offload responsibilities,” a colleague said. “This ensured a smooth transition and continued support.”

Provost’s impact extends across the Target Diagnostics Engineering and Science (TDES) section and beyond. One colleague wrote that “she embodies the full spirit of the Igniter Award qualities. Her ideas shine through in the way she approaches problems with creativity and care, as clearly exemplified in her management of our recent departmental move. She reimagined not just the logistics but the human experience of relocation, ensuring everyone’s needs were met with fairness and innovation.”

Another colleague added that “Anne radiates zeal; she brings a joyful, can-do energy to every interaction, reminding all of us that excellence and positivity are not mutually exclusive. Anne is the glue that holds our department together.”

Her influence reaches approximately 80 people in TDES, 15 in Target and Experimental Systems, and roughly 100 on the Supply Chain and CMS/Controls teams. As one team member summarized, “Anne embodies ‘people first, culture first.’ ”

Arsenia Rendon: Leading with Respect and Flexibility

Colleagues celebrated group leader and team lead Arsenia Rendon for her trustworthy leadership and her commitment to a supportive work environment.

“She is a trustworthy team member, collaborator, and colleague, being transparent as much as possible,” a colleague wrote. “She gives credit whenever it is due and addresses unprofessional or unkind behavior as soon as possible.”

Her leadership helps ensure everyone feels included and respected:

“She created a flexible and supportive work environment, treating everyone with respect and being respectful of their time. She made sure full-time telecommuters are not left out during group events like potlucks. She provided opportunities for varied voices and opinions during meetings and listens to them.”

Another colleague wrote:

“She values work-life balance, respects others’ time by canceling unnecessary meetings, and suggests walking meetings during one-on-ones. She is flexible when team members need time off for personal matters.”

Arsenia’s mentorship and outreach have had a lasting impact.

“She mentored others for career development and work-life balance as a group leader,” one team member noted. “She motivated team members to strive for and achieve excellence. She supported outreach efforts by organizing the NIFC Job Shadow Day, which inspired me to participate as a panelist.”

John Jett: Mission-first Leadership with Zeal

Colleagues praised NIF&PS Document Services group leader John Jett for his transformative leadership in shaping high-performing communications campaigns.

“John’s leadership style is one that inspires innovation, inclusiveness, and accountability,” one team member wrote. “He has been instrumental in shaping the culture of our organization, fostering an environment where team members feel valued and empowered to contribute their best work.”

His leadership encourages broad engagement across his team:

“John actively seeks input from all team members, regardless of their position or tenure, and creates opportunities for different voices to be heard. His approach to problem-solving encourages creative thinking and collaboration, which has led to numerous successful initiatives.”

Beyond day-to-day leadership, John’s organizational efforts have strengthened community bonds:

“He has organized and led major events that bring together staff, creating opportunities for networking, learning, and celebration. These events have become highlights of the year for many employees and have significantly contributed to a sense of community and shared purpose.”

One team member summarized his impact:

“John’s dedication to fostering a positive work environment, combined with his technical expertise and strategic vision, makes him an exemplary leader who truly embodies the spirit of the Igniter Award.”

Raspberry Simpson: Inspiring Innovation and Collaboration

Researcher Raspberry Simpson’s colleagues describe her as a leader whose integrity, inclusiveness, and enthusiasm raise the bar for scientific excellence.

One team member writes that Simpson “fosters an environment where different voices and opinions are encouraged, ensuring that all team members have a platform to contribute. Her patience and acceptance of outside-the-box thinking have led to a more innovative and dynamic team culture.”

Simpson’s technical leadership has produced significant results.

“Her leadership in NIF ARC proton source development, which involved coordinating input from multiple outside institutions, resulted in a new proton radiography platform. This achievement advanced scientific capabilities and demonstrated the power of collaborative effort, boosting team morale and drive.”

That mentorship extends beyond technical guidance:

“Her role as a mentor to summer scholars and her active participation in student seminars and workshops highlight her commitment to nurturing the next generation of scientists. Her ability to establish clear and attainable project scopes ensures that her mentees experience high-value learning opportunities and a high chance of success.”

As one colleague concluded:

“Dr. Simpson’s approach to leadership and collaboration serves as a powerful example for others. Her enthusiasm for her work and her ability to lead successful, innovative projects encourage others to pursue their own initiatives with the same level of passion and commitment.”
