LSO Workshop: OEM Laser Integration

Successful laser product integration necessitates more than engineering safety; it requires rigorous adherence to the CDRH "Chain of Compliance." This presentation addresses the technical reporting requirements for OEM laser sources and the mandatory documentation triggered when integrating higher-class sources into lower-class final systems. By applying the Suspicious Laser Product Protocol (SLaPP), we bridge the gap between technical engineering and commercial law to identify "red flag" components that bypass federal safety standards. Participants will evaluate the tort liability risks of adopting non-compliant hardware to ensure that every OEM component meets the "Implied Warranty of Merchantability" under the UCC prior to acceptance and integration into a final product.

Scott Wohlstein is the President and Photonics Specialist for The Photonics Group. With 46 years of experience, Scott is a noted researcher and patent holder recognized for the design and production of US and EU-compliant photonics systems. His career includes extensive R&D management and troubleshooting for various branches of the US and foreign governments. A dedicated educator, Scott has supported the next generation of specialists as an adjunct professor and guest lecturer at Fairleigh Dickinson University and Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He has also served as the editor for Measurements and Controls and on the editorial advisory board for Lasers & Optronics. A fellow member of the ANSI Z136 committees, Scott’s technical foundation includes an AAS in Lasers and Electro-Optics (Camden County College), a BS in Photonics Science and Technology (SUNY), and an MS in Management of Technology (NYU-Poly).
