ABSTRACT: Multiwavelength Laser Safety Calculations: Case Studies in Super Continuum Lasers
Determination of appropriate eye protection is relatively straight forward for a monochromatic laser system. In non-linear optics that result in wavelengths over a broad spectrum, the calculations become more complex. In the extreme case, supercontinuum lasers emit light energy in a very broad-spectrum range, making calculations of MPE quite difficult. Worse, since these “laser rainbows” often cover the entire visible spectrum, eyewear must be carefully selected such that users can still see while wearing it. An overview of laser safety calculations in systems of increasing complexity is presented along with a method for calculating MPE for a laser with an arbitrary spectral content (broad wavelength range or discrete wavelength) as well as a method for determining the appropriate laser eyewear protection for such a laser. In addition, other novel methods of protection are presented.

Judi Reilly is a Certified Laser Safety Officer with years of experience practicing laser safety. She works as a consultant in laser safety and Environment Health and Safety. Previously, she worked at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for most of her career and most recently Worcester Polytechnic (WPI). Judi serves on the ANSI Z136 subcommittee SSC-8. She is an enthusiastic instructor who teaches laser safety to aspiring LSOs. In addition, she is a 500-hour certified yoga instructor who works with all areas of practice.
