High-power laser operations at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) generate a complex mixed-field radiation environment spanning a wide range of particle types and energies. Ionizing radiation is produced through primary fusion reactions as well as laser–target interactions, with source terms varying significantly by experimental platform and target design. Prompt radiation fields during shot operations may include high-energy neutrons, energetic charged particles, and a broad photon spectrum extending from x-rays to gamma rays.

These operations present significant radiological hazards to personnel, including both prompt exposures and residual activation products resulting primarily from neutron-induced activation of structural materials and diagnostic components. The magnitude and composition of these hazards are highly dependent on shot yield, target composition, and facility configuration.

Hazard mitigation at NIF is achieved through an integrated radiological protection program incorporating engineered and administrative controls supported by real-time and post-shot radiological monitoring.

This presentation will discuss the ionizing radiation sources at NIF and describe the methodologies used to assess, control, and minimize occupational dose in accordance with DOE, institutional, and facility radiological protection requirements.
BIO: Anthony Novello
Anthony Novello is the Deputy Radiation Safety Officer for the National Ignition Facility (NIF), with 15 years of experience in radiation protection and radiological controls. His expertise includes operational health physics, radiological hazard analysis, and the implementation of controls for high-energy, mixed-field radiation environments. He is also qualified as a Deputy Laser Safety Officer, supporting laser safety and hazard mitigation programs within the NIF and Photon Science Directorate at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). A United States Navy veteran, Anthony was previously responsible for chemistry and radiological controls programs aboard Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines.
