Dr. Sandra Brereton, deputy principal associate director (DPAD) for operations, is responsible for managing the directorate operations team, which provides facility, information technology, environment, safety and health, training, security, and administrative services to the directorate. She previously led preparation and review activities for the start-up of NIF, including the introduction of hazardous materials and production of neutrons.

Dr. Brereton has held positions as associate project manager for personnel and environmental protection systems, Target Bay area integration manager, and NIF project assurance manager. She has experience in nuclear facility operations and was the deputy facility manager for LLNL’s plutonium facility. She also has considerable experience in nuclear and safety analysis, and she contributed to the early stages of design of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER).

She received a Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Toronto, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in nuclear engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
